I have changed my outgoing voice message to:

"Hi - You have reached the voicemail of.....someone who has NOT been having an affair with Tiger Woods, but just in case this is his wife calling random numbers from his cell phone, and my number happened to be in there, I have removed my name from this outgoing voice message so I cannot be identified per an "anonymous" tip from a "friend"....Please leave a message at the tone, unless this is Tiger's wife, because I'm scared. Thanks!"

WQXR - The Gratitude Project: Music We’re Grateful For

WQXR - The Gratitude Project: Music We’re Grateful For

The Gratitude Project: Music We’re Grateful For

This Thanksgiving, there's much to be grateful for: family, friends, and even in-laws. There's also music. As we prepare for another Thanksgiving holiday, WQXR reflects on Music We’re Grateful For.

Here's how you can participate: Leave a voice message on our spinvox line at 1-800-543-2543 or email your selections to gratitude@wqxr.org.

Explain why you're grateful for a particular piece of music. Did a Mendelssohn quartet make your wedding complete? Did a Bach partita help you cope with the loss of a loved one? Has Mahler been with you through an interminable air travel delay?

Tell us your story. Give us the full name of the piece, your first name and your neighborhood or city.

We’ll play your choices--and air your voices--all Thanksgiving Weekend.
So call us, write us, and tune in!
Our hosts offer their selections:

Terrance McKnight:
A Flowering Tree is John Adams' latest opera. The story and the music acknowledge and celebrate our multicultural society and our common frailties and humanity. Because of that, future generations will continue to appreciate and identify with the art form. For that I'm grateful.
Midge Woolsey:
Imagine a world full of pianos with no one able to play them! I’m grateful for talented pianists and Vladimir Horowitz was one of my favorites. His performance of Schumann’s Traumerei makes my heart ache with joy.
Elliott Forrest:
I am grateful for Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz. I was moved the first time heard it, was moved when I heard it played by a group of young amateur musicians and moved again when it was used as underscoring in the recent Ken Burns series about National Parks. It is a timeless piece of Americana.

Broadway Classroom workshop 9.26.09

Saturday, September 26, 2009
I worked at the Broadway Classroom workshop where participants did
a 'mock' vocal audition and learned part of the dance from "COOL"
with John Arthur Greene who plays Riff in WEST SIDE STORY.
After the workshop we saw the show and then go to go backstage for Q&A
with John and Michael Mastro who plays Glad Hand in the show.
What a fun day!!!

Whassup With All This PURPLE?

I had a stand up gig at Broadway Comedy Club on 9/17 and I was wearing a my new purple converse and new purple I heart ny purple sweatshirt.
As I ran down the stairs to the subway this lady was coming up the stairs and I heard her say to her friend....
"Whassup with all this purple?!"
I don't know if it was only directed at me - I am assuming that she must have seen a lot of purple or something.
Anyway - I opened my set with this story - but the audience said they liked the outfit and one of the audience members stopped me after the show and said
"You're right on with the purple... I work in fashion, and purple is really hot right now" -
so
IN YOUR FACE, SUBWAY STAIRS LADY!!!!!!!!!
(but thanks for giving me a good bit to do on stage!) :)

The return of SQUIRM

Happy Birthday, Nikola Tesla!

One hundred and fifteen years ago, Nikola Tesla was born in the small village of Smiljan, Vojna Krajina, in mondern-day Croatia. Beside the eponymous Tesla coil, Tesla is known for his contributions to the field of science, especially regarding electricity and electromagnetism.
In regards to the oft-cited Edison, Tesla had this to say:
If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after straw until he found the object of his search… I was a sorry witness of such doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per cent of his labor. –New York Times (19 October 1931)
While Tesla passed away in 1943, penniless, his legacy is lasting. He laid the groundwork for many modern branches of science and technology, including robotics, ballistics, remote control, radar, nuclear physics, and and theoretical physics.
He was also obsessed with pigeons.

A sign from Steve Allen...

June 6, 2009 -
When I got off the 1 train at 79th Street
I saw this book on the bench...
"HOW TO BE FUNNY"
Maybe it was a sign from Steve Allen, one of my comic idols......
I didn't take the book, even though no one was around on the platform, I just took a picture of it....
random!
